Corona launches fishing tournament for pulling trash out of the sea

Five tons of floating plastic were reeled-in off the coasts of China, Brazil, Mexico, and Israel on March 18 by local anglers participating in the Corona “Plastic Fishing Tournament.” The fun-packed event—held on Global Recycling Day—was intended to illustrate one of the ways by which the beer brand is currently voyaging toward its destination of net-zero plastic waste. Corona held its first “Plastic Fishing Tournament” a year ago, but at the time was open only to competitors in Mexico. This year’s expanded tourney drew 150 boat-borne participants for 15 hours of plastic-trash pickup. The event contributed to making the oceans a tiny bit healthier but also to improving the quality of life for the local anglers—the plastic they hauled aboard their vessels was delivered to local recycling centers for cash in exchange. Corona announced it’s already planning to cast its nets even wider for next year’s “Plastic Fishing Tournament” by extending invitations to anglers in Columbia, South Africa, and elsewhere around the planet.
