KOTEX scored with a bio sketch of the first female referee in men’s soccer

Kotex produced an ad (timed to coincide with the FIFA World Cup) that told the inspiring story of Lea Campos, the first woman to become a referee in men’s professional soccer. This was back in the 1960s, a time when misogyny was seemingly everywhere—and no less so than in the world of male professional sports. Making Campos the subject of a profile was unusual in that inspirational stories about women in sports are almost always about athletes, whereas here it was about a game official.
