HEINZ Ketchup celebrates cameos with SAG application

Heinz Ketchup has been in a lot of movies, turning up in countless scenes shot in eateries, grocery stores, kitchens, and more. Appropriately enough, just days before this year’s Academy Awards show, Heinz submitted on behalf of its closeup-ready product an application for a SAG-AFTRA union card. Word of the quest for guild membership spread thickly over the Internet and tantalized the gossip tastebuds of celebrity news Instagrammer DeuxMoi, who posted not one but two stories in support of the effort. As well, fans of the tangy-sweet condiment began sharing celluloid memories of favorite Heinz Ketchup clips. Alas, the generous slathering of social chatter (squeezed out initially by Heinz’s Canadian team) failed to influence SAG-AFTRA decision-makers, and the application for union membership was turned down. But there was no sting to the snub because Heinz Ketchup is accustomed to this sort of rejection—for example, in 2020 the brand created a filmography for itself at IMDB, only to have the owners of the site shut it down. Still, the bid for union membership demonstrated how it’s possible to keep a years’ old campaign from becoming stuck in the bottle.
