OSCAR MEYER brings Oscars to task for over-awarding Best Director to “people with wieners”

Jane Campion captured the Academy Award for Best Director this year, making her only the third woman ever to win the coveted golden trophy in that category. Weeks before Campion’s achievement, the marketing team at Oscar Mayer (no relation to Oscar Statuette) decided to raise awareness of this unconscionable gender win-gap and, at the same time, remind people of just what it is that the meat brand is most famous for. Relying on social media conversations and street promos in and around Hollywood, Oscar Mayer fed a rumor that nominees for Best Director are 46 times more likely to win if they have a wiener. Reaction from Screenland? “You’ll never eat hot dogs for lunch in this town again.” Hah, hah. No. That wasn’t the reaction. While true that the brand’s phallic punnery did raise a few eyebrows, the “If You Have a Wiener” campaign was otherwise well-received judging by the quality and quantity of Twitter and Instagram interactions it grilled up.
